BLA English MCAS Domination: March means: St. Patrick’s Day, hints of spring and the return of BLA ENGLISH MCAS DOMINATION! Last year, we tied Latin School in the best English MCAS scores in the state. This year, let’s top that! Every one of your classes will help you be prepared for English MCAS so do your work and get ready to show the state of Massachusetts what you’ve got.
Athletic Update:Tryouts for spring sports start the week of March 19th. You need to have an updated physical BEFORE you will be allowed to try out. Sports offered include softball (Mr. Zizza), baseball (Mr. Bernazzani) , outdoor track (Mr. Leussler), boys’ volleyball (Mr. Cao), and tennis (Mr. Crane). Please contact the specific coaches with any questions.
National French Contest / Library Closed: The National French Contest will be administered all day on Wednesday, March 7th in the upper and lower library and language lab. The library, therefore, will be closed all day on Wednesday, March 7th.
EXXONMOBIL BERNARD HARRIS MATH AND SCIENCE SCHOLARSHIPS: The Exxon Mobil Bernard Harris Math and Science Scholarships were established to encourage minority students to pursue college degrees and careers in science, technology, engineering and math. The scholarship program was created in 2010 by the first African American to walk in space and the Exxon Mobil Foundation to increase the number of underrepresented students pursuing careers in science, technology, engineering or math (STEM).Each June, $5,000 scholarships are awarded to two African American and two Hispanic students currently completing their senior year of high school in a member district of the Council of the Great City Schools. Thank you to all the teachers who wrote questions and the students and college students who helped Joana run the show. Job Shadow Day - The annual PIC Job Shadow Day is fast approaching- February 3, 2012. It’s a day for the students to choose what they want to learn for a day! Juniors, with a few senior exceptions, have been invited to participate this year visiting places like Tufts Dental School, the MBTA, IBM, FastCAP/Greentown Labs, Boston Police Department & Roxbury District Court, just to name a few. BAND, CHOIR, and THEORY STUDENTS: The BLA Music Program will be running a field trip next Thursday the 26th to Symphony Hall in Boston. The trip will take us to see a closed rehearsal with the Boston Symphony Orchestra and the Tanglewood Festival Chorus. The trip will meet in the band room at the beginning of 3rd period and not return to school until the end of the school day at 1:30. If you are interested in attending this trip the first 60 students to sign up outside the band room will receive permission slips on Monday. YOUTH CITIES: Youth CITIES (Creating Impact Through Innovation, Entrepreneurship, and Sustainability) is a boot camp designed to introduce teens to social entrepreneurship through a combination of lectures, discussion/debate, and role-playing. We are recruiting ambitious middle and high school students who are interested in learning about principles of entrepreneurship to drive change in their communities. Youth CITIES targets students who want to launch a business that will provide a sustainable solution to real world problem. The winner will receive $1500 seed grant money to launch their idea, and a specific group of mentors will be appointed as an Advisory Board to help them launch and to govern their spending. The ten-week program will be held on Saturday mornings from March 10 - May 12, 2012 at Microsoft’s NERD Center in Kendall Square in Cambridge.
