BLA School Parent Council Meeting Minutes
Attendees
The meeting was attended mostly by 7th and 9th grade parents, school administrators, committee members.
Meeting Opened
The meeting was called to order at 6:30 p.m. by Christopher Carter who reviewed the purpose of the SPC, the parents website and this particular meeting, which was geared toward the new parents to get them acclimated to the new environments and the resources available to them as they learn about the school. Chris turned the meeting over to Ms. Aaronson.
Reports from Headmaster and Other Adminstrators
Ms. Aaronson welcomed the new parents to the school and introduced them to key school administrators to direct questions:
Mr. Sullivan discussed all transportation issues which include problems on bus routes, MBTA passes, etc.
Mr. Barry summarized the Science requirements for the middle and high school and encourages parent to ask their children to perform at their best at all times and to cooperate with school rules.
Ms. Joyner explained the English curriculum, clusters and honors and AP English.
Ms. Carvalho reviewed Language requirements and encouraged parent to have children discuss problems with teachers sooner rather than later. She also briefly discussed the upcoming Language Lab fundraiser.
Ms. Washington explained the History requirement from 7th through 12th grade.
Ms. Pastor discussed the purpose of the guidance counselors and new information that is available on the guidance website.
Mr. Williams explained that it is important for students to follow school rules to assure their safety.
At closing, Ms. Aaronson explained that BLA is a college prep school and that each student should be prepared for college by the 12th grade. She also encouraged parents to contact her if they have contacted all key contacts and are not satisfied with the results.
Parents were encouraged to consult with veteran parents after the meeting.
The next SPC meeting was scheduled for Wednesday, October 1, 2008 at 6:30 p.m.
