Minutes of the Meeting on Wed - November, 05 2008

Approximately seventeen parents including committee members and the headmaster attended the meeting.

Meeting Opened


The meeting was called to order at 6:35 p.m.


Headmaster’s Report

Ms Aaronson informed attending parents that:

report cards were distributed Tuesday, November 4, 2008

results from the PSAT will be available the first or second week in December.

Peter Rawlings was Principal for the day at BLA 111/6/08

Seniors will receive privileges depending on their grades and they will be allowed to leave after 6th period with letter.

9th graders were introduced to health day on Friday where discussion of personal values and decision are discussed

BLA received a $300,000 grant from Mass Tech. Institution which will be used to fund solar energy and energy efficiency. The request is for $300,000 to fund a $240,000 photovoltaic system and $60,000 in energy efficiency. Roof repair/replacement is also planned and will be funded through BPS capital improvements.

teachers have laptops and printers, but need cartridges

seventeen new computers were donated by IBM (15 in the library and 2 in Ms. Campia’s room)

the school website is being reconstructed, but is not at the stage where is should be

teachers are being offered 2 hours professional development starting next week and teachers who presently have sites will assist their colleagues to build sites

Announced was the Winter Concert on December 18, 2008; the Musical Talent Night on March 26, 2009; Once Upon a Mattress on April 2, 2009 and the Spring Concert on May 21, 2009

The new wish list is on the website

the open house normally scheduled for November has been postponed to January 22, 2009. This was approved by the teacher’s union.

Committee Report

Chris announced the upcoming events and school closing dates.

Connie discussed the SPC election and the responsibilities of each position entails. Connie expressed her wish to pursue other activities pertaining to the school. Positions available were for 2 Co-Chairs and a Co-Secretary. The election results was that Chris and Connie will continue their position as co-chairs and Yvonne will also continue her position as secretary with Carolina Nunez as co-secretary.

Aixa and member of the Site Council briefed us on the last Site Council Meeting which focused on BLA’s code of discipline and Bronwen Feeney volunteered to be an alternate for the Site Council.

The ice cream party was deferred until after the holiday and a volunteer is needed to organize this event.

The seniors’ Hypnotist event raised $2061, and their profit was $1,111 after all expenses Jackie will be responsible for the event next year

Sports banquet needs parent volunteers and an organizer (preferably a parent who has a BLA athlete)

The SPC website needs more parent contributions to generate content

Before the close of the meeting, Chris emphasized the importance of parent involvement and the ongoing challenges that we face recruiting and retaining parents.

Parents discussed possible fundraisers and possible ways to make fundraisers more successful by including students’ incentives (pizza party, etc). Also discussed was tapping into the ACIDOM (African Community.) This was introduced as a possible fundraiser by Abdel Mohamed

The next SPC meeting was scheduled for Wednesday, December 3, 2008 at 6:30 p.m. and the Agenda will be centered around the following: community building events in the winter, post holiday follow-up of members’ letter, fundraising ideas and ways to involve students.
