BLA School Parent Council Meeting Minutes
May 6, 2009
Attendees
Approximately fourteen parents including committee members and the headmaster attended the meeting.
Meeting Opened
Chris called the meeting to order at 6:40 p.m. and gave a brief update on the budget situation. He recommended that parents remain vigilant in our efforts to communicate with our elected officials and he also informed us of dates that the City Councilors will be meeting to discuss the budget where parents might be welcomed.
Headmaster’s Report
Ms Aaronson informed attending parents that:
Report cards will be distributed on May 12th for the fourth term and encourage parents to let students know the importance of the 5 th term
Most seniors are already gone, but the final data on seniors is not available.
Junior Class Fair has been scheduled for June 9 from 11 a.m. – 1:40 p.m.
She mentioned that she might lose people due to seniority right after all designated letters have been issued to the people receiving pink slips.
Class selections for 10 th graders were scheduled for May 7, 2009 in Carol Hall – class selection will be sent home to parents with course selection.
Last day of school for this academic year will be June 26th
Committee Report
Bronwen Feeney discussed essays and the three winners who received $1000 each. Also discussed at length were possible new guidelines that could be implemented next year for the senior essay.
Connie reported that the Friends of BLA have $715.70 in the checking and $7,264 in the savings account. $3,000 is earmarked for the essay awards.
The Athletic Banquet June 1, 2009 has changed venue and will now be held from 6-8 @ BLA.
The Ice Cream Party has been scheduled for June 18 during the lunch periods
It was agreed that the Hypnotist event will be more beneficial if held in the fall (October)
Kathy contacted the lawyers regarding the 501C status, but was informed that the process is slow
Also discussed were plans for the SPC/Friends of BLA to utilize the acquired space in the basement for parent activities. The hope is for this space to be used as a Thrift Store/Parent Center which could go into effect as early as this fall (September).
It was suggested that a summary of the Site Council Meeting should be made available for posting on the parent website
The next SPC meeting was scheduled for Wednesday, June 3, 2009 at 6:30 p.m.
The meeting adjourned at 8:20 p.m.
