BLA School Based Rules


1.    Any Boston Latin Academy student who is found on school premises or at school-sponsored or school-related events, including athletic games, in possession of a dangerous weapon, including, but not limited to a gun or a knife; or a controlled substance as defined in Chapter 94C, including, but not limited to, marijuana, cocaine, and heroin, may be subject to expulsion from the school by the headmaster.


Consequence for violation: That student shall be notified in writing of an opportunity for a hearing; provided, however, that the student may have representation, along with an opportunity to present evidence and witnesses at said hearing before the headmaster.


2.    Any Boston Latin Academy student who assaults a headmaster, assistant headmaster, teacher, teacher’s aide or other education staff on school premises or at school-sponsored or school-related events, including athletic games, may be subject to expulsion from school by the headmaster.


Consequence for violation: That student shall be notified in writing of an opportunity for a hearing; provided, however, that the student may have representation, along with an opportunity to present evidence and witnesses at said hearing before the headmaster.


3.    The use of racial and ethnic slurs and sexual harassment will not be tolerated.


Consequence for violation: Student(s) will be suspended in accordance with the Code of Discipline for the Boston Public Schools.


4.    Damage to school property (defacement and vandalism) will not be tolerated.


Consequence for violation: Student(s) will be suspended in accordance with the Code of Discipline for the Boston Public Schools and make restitution.


5.    Students are to be in their assigned rooms unless they have an official pass.


Consequence for violation: Student(s) will serve 1 day detention in accordance with the code of Discipline for the Boston Public Schools.


6.    Students must bring in a written excuse within 3 School days of any absence. An excused absence may be granted for one of the following reasons: sickness, injury, hospitalization, religious holy days, a court appearance, or a death in the family.


7.    The use and wearing of music makers, i.e., cassettes, blasters, radios, walkman, disc-man, boxes is forbidden except in the cafeterias before school. They may be used after school dismissal.


Consequence for violation: Equipment will be confiscated and returned only to parent/guardian.


8.    Cellular phones are not allowed in school in accordance with the BPS code of Discipline section 7.1 0.4


9.    Possession of obscene materials is not allowed in school.


Consequence for violation: Parent/guardian may be contacted and students will be assigned detention.


10. Students must return required notes and forms and signed report cards to school within 3 school days.


Consequence for violation: Student(s) will be assigned detention and parent/guardian may be contacted.


11. Students must keep books in the condition in which they were received.


Consequence for violation: Defacing and loss of books will result in having to pay for their replacement.


12. Eating food during class is not permitted.


Consequence for violation: A warning will be given and student may be assigned detention.


13. Appropriate and tasteful dress are required. No T-shirts with improper messages or logos (including profanity, obscenity, violence, drug abuse, alcohol use or sexual connotations) are allowed. No hat, scarf, bandana, sweatband, or comb of any kind should be worn. Exceptions made for religious or medical reasons.


Consequence for violation: Student(s) will be assigned detention, materials will be confiscated and student may be sent home (after parent/guardian is contacted) to change into proper attire.


14. A person who is absent from school without permission is considered truant.


Consequence for violation: Student(s) will not be allowed to make up work.


15. Students may be denied school-provided transportation for violation of the Code of Discipline while riding to or from school. Student behavior may a1so be monitored by video on selected school buses and the video may be used in disciplinary procedures.


Consequence for violation: Loss of transportation privileges, detention, suspension or possible expulsion depending upon severity of violation.


16. Students assigned to science laboratory courses must follow all posted rules and regulations regarding "Safety in the Laboratory."


Consequence for violation: Student may lose all laboratory privileges and be subject to detention or suspension.


17. Students are responsible for their own work. Cheating, i.e. plagiarism will not be tolerated.


Consequence for violation: Student(s) involved with receive a "0" for the assignment and parent/guardian will be contacted.


18. Computers are to be used for academic purposes only. Inappropriate use of computer technology or the use of threatening or abusive language on E-mail, Internet or any other computer application is not allowed.


Consequence for violation: Student(s) will lose all computer privileges and will be suspended.


19. Students must follow the Code of Discipline for the Boston Public Schools and obey the school-based rules.


Consequence for violation: Student(s) may lose privileges.


20. Students may not use tobacco products on school property.     


Consequence for violation: Student( s) may be suspended.


21. All lockers are school property and are subject to inspection by school officials.


22. Students must carry their School ID during school and all school sponsored events.


Consequence for violation: Detention may be assigned.


23. Students suspected of violating the Code of Discipline.


Consequence for violation: Student(s) may be searched.
