My 7th grader has been hearing very convincing rumors about things “they” will do to him (and other 7th graders on Halloween), and has requested to stay home on that day.  The rumor has to do with wedgies on the buses...that the sixies are the targets...etc.  His request was very serious.  Have other parents heard about these rumors from their children?

While I realize the school certainly doesn’t condone this behavior, there are always some people who take the fun too far on this day.  I am curious to know what things have gone on in the past and what level of “celebration” actually does takes place at the school.  I remember last year when students who had dressed in costume (and were not wearing masks) were turned away--that was all over the news and I felt a bit extreme.

okay people....I just got off the phone and a Juniors parent confirmed that she heard of at least one situation where her then sixie reported that two sixies were thrown into a dumpster near the school by upperclassmen, and that her child had to run!!!!!!!!

Ms. G-A told us at the last SPC meeting that the kids will be able to wear costumes to school this year as a fundraiser. She asked for parent volunteers that day. I’ll try to get more details for you.

The problem is though that the junior class is getting all the money for the fundraiser and the senior class gets none of it.  We need more money than the junior class because of our prom, yearbook, graduation, and other senior events.  Also with Halloween being Sixie Rush day, Mrs. A gets on the intercom every year and tells the students that they will be prosecuted if they rush anyone.  When I was sixie I got hair die put in my hair.  No big deal.  As a senior I know your kid doesn’t have anything to worry about.  You should not baby him too much and let him go though these expreinces.  They are a major part of highschool.

I e-mailed Ms. Aaronson on this. She replied with the following. Stay tuned…

I do not have the specifics. The junior class officers and advisors are working on the specifics. I will share the information as soon as it is finalized.

I have to diisagree with Chris’s comment.  I think those events in highschool actually will help you later in life.  With the incident in Ohio, that boy probably had mental issues which is different from the Sixie Rush Day.  I also think that every year the rushing seems less intense.  Seniors and mostly all the upper classmen don’t participate.  It is the eight graders who cause the biggest problem.  I remeber when I was in seventh grade that I actually wasn’t that nervous and I thought it sounded kind of fun.

My child was also concerned about Sixie Rush Day.  I received a message last night from Mrs. G-A that there would be no Sixie Rush Day.  I hope this has eased my childs concern about what could happen that day! grin
