Dear Boston Latin Academy Parents,

I am writing this letter to tell you about an exciting educational opportunity we have planned for our students, your children.  Last year we wrote a grant for an “Outdoor Classroom Pilot Project” which would support all our science classes from grades 7 - 12.  The goal is to extend science beyond the BLA classroom to the courtyard of the building.  All activities are designed to engage students in the sciences by providing experimentation that is not possible to do in the confines of a regular classroom. 

Some of the activities that we would like to do in an outdoor classroom environment are:

· Plant and gardening experiments with a greenhouse built so that this can continue during the cold months
· Solar and wind experiments
· Demonstration area for important environmental science concepts

The good news is that we were awarded the grant for the amount of $25,000.  An outdoor classroom committee was formed and has been meeting on a regular basis this year to plan and design the implementation of this program.  During these planning sessions, it did not take us long to realize that $25,000 is not enough money to do what we want and need to do for the students.  So I need your help in supplementing this money.  I am asking each of you to consider “Sponsoring a BLA Scientist” by contributing a donation to the Outdoor Classroom Fund.  No contribution will be too small or too large!  A contribution from $5 to $25 (or more) will go a long way in helping us develop the scientist in all our students.
