All-

Parkway Youth Wrestling is a club based in West Roxbury for city kids in grades 3-8.  We have some kids from this year’s team that may be heading to BLA next year and probably every year we’ll have kids going to BLA, and we want to make sure that they can continue in the sport at the high school level.  Wrestling is a great high school sport for many reasons, including:
-Very inexpensive
-Open to all sizes, you can’t be too big or too small
-No cuts
-Individual sport within a team structure
-Combat sports like wrestling and martial arts teach tremendous lessons about self-discipline and good sportsmanship

Question is, what is the best way to get wrestling at BLA?  Who should we contact or write to?  Please post here or email us at if you have suggestions or can help us get started.

Thanks.

Thanks for responding.  Just for clarification for others reading this, wrestling started at BLS at least thirty years ago, when the sport wasn’t as widespread as it is now, which is probably why the parents paid for the coach.  Wrestling is now funded by the school at BLS.  Present day, the sport is offered at almost every high school the size of BLA, and really the question is not “should BLA have wrestling”, but “why doesn’t BLA have wrestling?”.

As far as resources go, we know in the present economic times that resources are limited.  Parkway Wrestling, as a volunteer organization, does not have any resources to bring to BLA.  Our plan is to continue to get kids involved in the sport, and encourage them and their parents to talk to the BLA administration about the sport.  We are confident that if we can drive interest in the sport then the school will add the sport, it’s just a matter of when.

My son, currently a freshman at BLA, wrestled in the 6th grade and loved it so much that he worked out with the the BLS team but got tired of the bus timeto BLS and not being able to compete on the team. I’m sure he’d wrestle at BLA if he had the chance and I’d contribute his share of expenses given the opportunity - Bob F
