This past weekend the BLA delegation of 85 students, 7 teachers, 2 student teachers, and 1 parent, attended the 2006 MassJCL State Convention held at UMass Amherst. The two day convention was ably run by the student officers who included our own Vanessa Durand, 1st Vice-President, Tahisha Desir, 2nd Vice-President, and Meseret Oldjira, Historian. Many consider this the best convention yet, due, in no small part, to the fact that after 4 years of waiting, we once again captured the coveted Janet Rajotte State Trophy. Some of our spectacular wins include the following:
The Novice Certamen Team, coached by Ms. Rivera, came in 2nd place. Team members included Tim Devlin, Michael Howard, Nick Robinette, and Henock Woldemichael.
The Lower Certamen Team, coached by Dr. Properzio, came in 3rd place. Team members included Ashley Belmer, Katlyne Demosthene, Jared Hicks, and Richard Lapia.
Academic Finals Upper Level: Rachel Singh, 1st Place
Overall Graphic Arts Medal: Meseret Oldjira, 1st Place
Overall Olympika Medal: Catherine Droser, 2nd Place
Newsletter Award: 1st Place Kerri Bisaga, Marie Pierre, James Boggie, Editors
Community Service Award: 1st Place for our 330 hours of work at Prison Book Program and WGBH
State Tee Contest: 1st Place
Toga Parade Spirit Award: 1st Place
There are too many ribbon winners to mention them all, however, you will be able to see their names on the bulletin board outside room 217 by the end of next week.
And finally, the BLACC now has three new officers on the MassJCL Executive Board. They are:
Vanessa Durand, President
Audane Leger, Parliamentarian
Kerri Bisaga, Publications Editor
A big thank you especially goes out to our teachers and chaperones without whom none of this can happen. They are Ms. Hausey, Dr. Properzio, Ms. Rivera, Ms. Salter, Ms. Hui, Mr. Lane, and MassJCL co-Chair Ms. Fillion; student teachers Ms. Hultgren and Mr. Beck; and finally to parent, Ms. Bisaga.
