The best suggestion I have is to make sure that the student is registered with the HOPE Line. The HOPE Line is taking registrations for four days during February vacation. Registering with the HOPE Line does NOT mean you are registering for a summer job. It means you are registering to be ABLE TO BE PAID by a summer job that is financed through this fund.
For example, the Franklin Park Zoo has hired younger teens as summer interns. Although they are hired by the Franklin Park Zoo, they are paid through the City of Boston Hope Line Funding. A student who applies for the teen intern position but is not registered with the HOPE Line would not be paid. This also applies to teen counselor positions with the Community Centers around the City of Boston. Therefore, when a community-based organization starts recruiting summer applications, many of them will ask if you have already registered with the HOPE Line.
Another tip for younger students: many organizations tend to hire the students that VOLUNTEER at their organization. Example would be the Museum of Science, New England Aquarium, and many local hospitals.
Ms. Mitchell in the PIC Office also helps students locate volunteer opportunities. The students may also meet with their guidance counselors for ideas and suggestions. All guidance counselors are in the cafeterias supervising lunch duty. This is frequently a good time to take a few minutes to talk with the counselors. I can usually be found in the main cafeteria.
